Mason Greenwood may be shining at Marseille — 11 goals in 17 matches and back to a world-class level — but his international future is anything but clear. With Thomas Tuchel closing the door on an England return, Jamaica hoped to seize the opportunity. Instead, they’re facing a storm.
Greenwood becoming a Jamaican international? Far from certain. His judicial past, marked by the 2022 allegations that severely damaged his reputation despite the case being dropped, still casts a long shadow. Fans, officials and even players remain divided.
Sportingly, Jamaica sees a massive opportunity. Greenwood now holds a Jamaican passport through his grandparents, and the federation wanted him available for the 2026 World Cup play-offs against New Caledonia.
But the signals have been mixed. In September, Greenwood refused a call-up, citing a “family decision”. The hesitation cooled Jamaica’s initial excitement — and raised doubts internally.
“Showing up just for a World Cup? It would be a farce”
And here comes the real obstacle: the squad itself. Several Jamaican internationals don’t want Greenwood involved. Isaac Hayden, capped 12 times, did not mince his words.
“The quality, the talent, the stats… all of that is exceptional. But at the end of the day, it’s about integrity. Showing up just for a World Cup? It would be a farce,” said Hayden. His view is reportedly shared by other senior players, frustrated at the idea of seeing Greenwood parachuted in for the biggest games without having endured the same battles they fought for years.
Jamaica wants Greenwood. Greenwood hesitates. And the locker room is openly resistant. For now, his international future is stuck in limbo — brilliant on the pitch, but unwelcome where it matters most.
