Mason Greenwood’s future appears to be moving further away from Turkey. While a transfer to Fenerbahçe had been seriously considered, the Marseille forward has seen that option nearly disappear following the presidential election at the Istanbul club.
Olympique de Marseille will likely part ways with Greenwood this summer, but Turkey no longer seems to be his destination. According to several reports, the English striker had agreed to join Fenerbahçe if presidential candidate Hakan Safi won the election. However, the vote went in favor of Aziz Yildirim, who secured a comfortable victory with almost twice as many votes.
Roma Emerges as the Leading Option
The immediate consequence is that several transfer plans backed by Safi have been put on hold, including Greenwood’s proposed move. Deals involving Luis Suarez, Hakan Calhanoglu, and Merih Demiral also appear to be in jeopardy.
For Greenwood, this outcome closes an important route for the summer transfer window. As things stand, a move to AS Roma now appears to be the most credible option.
The coming weeks should provide greater clarity regarding the English forward’s future, but the possibility of joining Fenerbahçe now looks extremely unlikely after the change in direction at the Turkish club.
