OM is fuming. Defeated by Sporting Portugal (1-2) in the Champions League, the Marseillais not only lost three points — they lost their composure. Between Emerson’s red card and several decisions deemed inconsistent, Roberto De Zerbi and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang literally saw red.
“We paid for refereeing errors. I didn’t like the way the match was officiated. This referee was not the right one for a match of this level,” De Zerbi said to Canal+, clearly at his wit’s end. The Italian, already frustrated by recent away defeats, did not digest the management of Slovenian referee Rade Obrenovic.
“It’s scandalous,” Aubameyang exclaimed
Aubameyang echoed the sentiment, furious after Emerson’s first yellow card: “It’s scandalous. He couldn’t do anything else with his hand! Tonight, the referees were not up to the task. In the Champions League, with such stakes, it’s unacceptable.”
Already criticized for his poor European run, De Zerbi can at least count on a supportive dressing room. But after this new setback and the feeling of injustice, tensions are rising. And in Marseille, when things heat up, it’s never a pretense.
