A massive rumor is currently shaking Spain regarding the future broadcasting of the Champions League. According to several Spanish media outlets, Real Madrid and UEFA are reportedly discussing a totally revolutionary project: broadcasting every Champions League, Europa League, and Conference League match for free through a new advertising-funded platform.
Free Champions League football? Real Madrid has launched a wild idea and the football world is going crazy. According to these reports, the project is being directly pushed by Florentino Pérez, president of Real Madrid, alongside his right-hand man Anas Laghrari.
UEFA Already Distances Itself From the Project
The goal would be to massively revive interest in European football with a model that is more accessible to the general public, while integrating advertising revenue to finance the competitions.
But this spectacular idea is still far from becoming reality. According to RMC Sport, UEFA has absolutely no plans to introduce such a system anytime soon. The European body has recently signed enormous long-term TV contracts with broadcasters across Europe, especially with Canal+ in France. These highly lucrative deals make a switch to a completely free model almost impossible for now.
Behind the scenes, some observers still see this proposal as another attempt by Real Madrid to influence the economic future of European football… but also to gradually ease tensions with UEFA after the fallout caused by the Super League project.
