“It’s a joke” : Tebas fires back at PSG and Al-Khelaïfi

Speaking at a Financial Times event, the president of La Liga once again took aim at Paris Saint-Germain and its chairman, whom he regularly criticizes because of the club’s state-backed ownership model.

Javier Tebas has not changed his stance: in his eyes, PSG remains public enemy number one. According to him, the Parisian club holds significant influence within UEFA, particularly regarding financial fair play regulations — a sensitive issue Tebas has been battling for years.

Tebas denounces PSG’s influence and state-backed model

“For me, it’s a joke that PSG and Al-Khelaïfi are in charge of financial fair play. I don’t think that’s ideal. It’s true that recently PSG has been more measured (in its spending), but it’s been a decade of partying and now that it’s becoming normal again, it’s going to run this? No, that’s not possible,” he explained.

For several years, Javier Tebas has openly opposed Paris Saint-Germain and the model of state-owned clubs. The La Liga president denounces what he calls “financial doping” linked to public capital, arguing that PSG distorts competition in Europe. He also criticizes UEFA’s enforcement of financial fair play, which he considers too lenient toward the Parisian club. Another point of tension is the alleged influence of Nasser Al-Khelaïfi within European football’s governing bodies — ultimately reflecting a clash between two visions of the game: a self-financed, “sustainable” model defended by Tebas versus one driven by massive state-backed investment.
