Former Valencia CF and, above all, FC Barcelona defender, capped five times for the French national team, Jérémy Mathieu is now experiencing a rather unexpected career path.

Speaking on Thursday on beIN Sports’ program Safe Play, the former international opened up about his surprising career change. After many years at the highest level of football, he now works as a sales assistant in an Intersport store near Aix-en-Provence.

A Legal Battle Behind His Career Change

“I tried to stay in football, like everyone else,” he first explained, before hinting at a more complex situation behind the scenes. “I can’t talk about it. Marked by depression after the end of his playing career, Jérémy Mathieu was able to rely in particular on the support of Loïc Loval-Landré, a former teammate from the Sochaux academy, as he worked to rebuild himself. Although he is currently walking the aisles of Intersport, the former Blaugrana insists that this chapter is not meant to last forever. “I won’t do this indefinitely. It was to have a social life,” he concluded candidly.
