On the eve of the UEFA Super Cup clash against Tottenham, Luis Enrique made a decisive and symbolic call: Gianluigi Donnarumma will not be part of PSG’s squad. The move all but seals the Italian goalkeeper’s departure from the club.

In Tuesday’s press conference, the Spanish coach explained that the decision was purely sporting, tied to the arrival of Lucas Chevalier. “These are always difficult decisions to make, I know. I can only speak positively about Gigio Donnarumma. He is one of the best in the world at his position, without a doubt, and even better as a person. But we were looking for a different goalkeeper profile,” he said. “I take 100% responsibility for this difficult decision,” he added.

Former Lille keeper Chevalier will start against Spurs, with Renato Marin as backup, while Donnarumma remains in Paris.

Minutes later, Donnarumma posted a heartfelt farewell message on Instagram, strongly hinting at his exit. In the locker room, the news was met with emotion. PSG captain Marquinhos paid tribute to his teammate: “He’s written part of the club’s history, and we thank him from the bottom of our hearts. If we win this title, it will also be thanks to him. He’s a friend, a good person, and an important leader.”

The Brazilian defender also stressed the cyclical nature of football: “I’ve been here for 12 or 13 years, and I’ve seen the same thing happen to other key players. One day, I’ll leave too. But players come and go, the club remains.”

With Donnarumma out, Luis Enrique will count on Chevalier and Marin in his quest for PSG’s first trophy of the season — turning the page on a major chapter in the club’s recent history.
