PSG captain Marquinhos and several teammates paid tribute to Gianluigi Donnarumma after the Italian goalkeeper’s departure was made official on Tuesday.

A hero of last season’s historic Champions League triumph, Donnarumma was left out of the squad for Wednesday’s UEFA Super Cup against Tottenham and told to leave, with Lucas Chevalier already named as his successor.

“Someone decided I could no longer be part of the group or contribute to the team’s success,” Donnarumma wrote on Instagram, expressing his “disappointment and sadness” without naming Luis Enrique. The Spanish coach later fully assumed responsibility for the decision in his press conference.

Marquinhos admitted the situation was “always difficult”, recalling that in his 12 or 13 years at the club he’d seen other key players face the same fate. “Players come and go, but the club and the supporters remain. The history stays,” he said, while stressing that seeing “Gigio” go would be “painful.”

“He’s a very good friend, a good person”

“What he did last season was incredible,” the Brazilian captain continued. “Thanks to him, we reached the final and won the title. He’s a very good friend, a good person, and a true leader in the dressing room.”

On social media, PSG players sent their goodbyes: Ousmane Dembélé wrote “Thanks for everything numero uno”, Désiré Doué posted “The best”, Achraf Hakimi commented “Uno di noi”, Presnel Kimpembe added “Grande Gigioni.” Kylian Mbappé, now at Real Madrid, simply left a heart emoji under his former teammate’s farewell post.
