Safonov Heroic as PSG Win the Intercontinental Cup

Paris Saint-Germain clinched the Intercontinental Cup at the end of a nerve-shredding final, carried by a stratospheric performance from Matvey Safonov. The French champions added a major trophy to their cabinet by edging Flamengo on penalties (2–1 pens) after a fiercely contested showdown decided by the brilliance of their goalkeeper.

From the opening minutes, PSG imposed an intense press and suffocated the Brazilian side. An early effort from Fabian Ruiz was ruled out by VAR, but Paris kept pushing. In the 38th minute, slick combination play paid off as Khvicha Kvaratskhelia arrived at the far post to turn in a teasing cross, giving PSG a deserved lead before the break.

Safonov the decisive shootout hero

After half-time, Flamengo returned with renewed intent. The tempo rose and, on the hour mark, a clash between Marquinhos and De Arrascaeta led to a penalty after video review. Jorginho converted calmly to level the score, sending the match into a gripping battle. Despite several clear chances and the introduction of Ousmane Dembélé, PSG could not regain the advantage.

Extra time followed the same pattern, with Paris pressing and creating danger but running into a compact Brazilian defense and an alert Rossi. With no winner after 120 minutes, the final was decided in a penalty shootout.

This was Safonov’s moment. The Russian goalkeeper saved four Flamengo penalties in succession, denying De la Cruz, Saúl, Pedro and Léo Pereira. Even missed attempts from PSG, including Dembélé and Barcola, could not derail them. A final decisive save sealed the triumph, confirming PSG’s victory and crowning Safonov as the outstanding architect of a historic title.
