Russia has made a decision: Matvey Safonov is sent back to Paris. After a lackluster draw against Peru (1-1), the PSG goalkeeper, already criticized for his lack of playing time in the capital, will not even travel to face Chile.
Valeri Karpin did not beat around the bush. According to the coach, if the match against Peru had only been a friendly, Safonov probably would not have stepped onto the field. His disappointing performance sealed his fate: immediate return to Paris.
In Russia, criticism is pouring in, particularly regarding the goal conceded from a long-range shot by Alex Valera. A new setback that further undermines his status, which is already shaky both in the national team… and at PSG.

Safonov saw himself replacing Chevalier
The timing is particularly cruel as Safonov had recently put pressure on Paris to get more minutes, taking advantage of Lucas Chevalier’s hesitations. But at this rate, it is now two coaches, Luis Enrique and Karpin, who seem to doubt him.
The Russian coach even gives him a little ultimatum. If he wants to keep the goal for Russia at the World Cup, he will need playing time. “He is a mature player. He will make the decision he deems necessary. I don’t think he is satisfied with his current situation at PSG. The time will come when he will have to make a decision.”
Safonov, who saw himself taking Chevalier’s place in the coming days, now seems to need to find an exit… not an easy life for a goalkeeper at PSG.
