A thunderclap in the world of football. According to a study by CIES published this Wednesday, several PSG players are reportedly paid far less than they deserve. Yes, you read that right: despite the millions from Qatar, some Parisians are… underpaid.
PSG has made a significant effort to reduce its wage bill. In 2 seasons, Paris has gone from 110% of its budget to less than 60% for player salaries. The club has celebrated this in a recent statement. However, CIES believes this may not necessarily be an advantage.
The International Centre for Sports Studies analyzed 100 players worldwide by comparing their deserved salary, calculated based on playing time, match level, starting rate, and position, with their actual salary. And the verdict is surprising.
Joao Neves, one of the most underpaid players on the planet
According to CIES, Joao Neves should earn €17.3 million per year. But at PSG, he only earns… €4.8 million. A huge gap for someone who ranks 4th globally among the most underpaid players according to sporting meritocracy.
Other Parisians are also significantly “underpaid.” The report also mentions several PSG players, including: Kvaratskhelia: deserves €16.2 million (compared to €10.8 million today), Pacho, Barcola, Doué, Kang-In Lee: all estimated to be paid less than they “should” be. In other words… PSG has one of the most undervalued squads in terms of remuneration according to this method.
On the other hand, CIES estimates that Lucas Hernandez, with his €13.2 million annual salary, is considered well above his sporting merit.
