After eleven memorable seasons with Paris Saint-Germain, Marco Verratti left the club in the summer of 2023. Now playing in Qatar, the Italian midfielder has revealed the true story behind his departure in an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport.

Despite speculation, Verratti made it clear: Luis Enrique had nothing to do with his exit.

“They said I left PSG because Luis Enrique wanted me out. That’s not true. I assure you, my decision was made well before he arrived. I spoke with Nasser (Al-Khelaïfi) and told him I needed a new challenge. We parted on excellent terms. He’s a great person,” Verratti explained.

“Luis Enrique is brilliant”

The 2021 European champion also praised the Spanish manager’s impact in Paris: “Luis Enrique is brilliant. He’s built a fantastic group where the collective matters. PSG no longer relies solely on stars — though the stars are still there. He’s found the right balance. They’ll keep winning for years.”

A strong message of respect — and a clear statement: Verratti left on his own terms, without bitterness, and with admiration for the project now unfolding at PSG.
