Twenty-eight years after France’s historic World Cup triumph, one name continues to come up whenever the 1998 champions reunite: Stéphane Guivarc’h. The reason is simple. The former France striker has completely disappeared from the radar of his former teammates and no longer takes part in the group’s gatherings.
Where has Stéphane Guivarc’h gone? Has he chosen to live a quiet life away from the spotlight? In an interview with L’Équipe, Emmanuel Petit admitted that he has not heard from the former French international for many years. His absence remains a mystery to many members of the legendary 1998 squad.
The Missing Figure of France 98
“The player I lost touch with and would love to see again? Stéphane Guivarc’h,” Petit revealed. The World Cup winner explained that the former striker deliberately distanced himself from the France 1998 association and everything connected to that unforgettable adventure. “His name comes up often when we meet. In a way, we miss him,” Petit admitted.
The former Arsenal midfielder said he does not really know the reasons behind Guivarc’h’s decision despite the many rumors that have circulated over the years. Petit also reflected on his own departure from the association for fifteen years, explaining that he eventually realized the World Cup story belongs to something greater than any individual and connects the players for life.
After retiring from football, Guivarc’h chose a very different path from most former internationals. He became a swimming pool salesman in Brittany and gradually stepped away from professional football and the media. Although he later returned to the sport as president of a Regional 1 club near Concarneau, his decision to cut ties with the France 98 world continues to puzzle his former teammates. Nearly three decades after lifting the trophy, the World Cup winners remain closely connected, but one notable absentee is still missing: Stéphane Guivarc’h.
