The United States are making a strong impression at their World Cup. After convincing victories against Paraguay (4-1) and Australia (2-0), Mauricio Pochettino’s side have already secured their place in the Round of 32 and are beginning to fuel major ambitions.
Could the USA be the surprise package of this World Cup? Some former football stars are starting to believe so. And what if they were the team that went all the way and lifted the trophy?
Henry and Ibrahimovic Back the USA
Speaking on Fox Sports, Thierry Henry drew a comparison with France’s 1998 World Cup-winning team. The former French striker believes the change in mentality within the American camp is a sign that something significant is happening. Henry pointed to Pochettino’s recent comments about winning the tournament rather than simply aiming for a respectable run, describing it as evidence of a growing belief.
Henry also recalled France’s journey to glory in 1998, noting that confidence can transform a team’s destiny. According to him, once players, coaches, and supporters begin to truly believe, unexpected achievements can become possible.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic went even further in his praise. The former PSG striker said the United States have everything required to shock the world, especially with the backing of their home crowd. He argued that momentum and confidence are the most important factors at this stage of the competition and even admitted he believes the Americans can win the World Cup if they continue to improve match after match.
