FC Barcelona has officially withdrawn from the European Super League project, delivering a new blow to the breakaway competition that aimed to reshape the landscape of European football. Long a driving force behind the initiative alongside Real Madrid, the Catalan club has now turned the page.
As things stand, only Real Madrid still believes in the Super League. In an official statement, Barça confirmed it had notified both the European Super League Company and the clubs still tied to the project of its decision to withdraw.
Super League project loses major supporters
Since the failed launch in 2021, some participants had continued exploring possible relaunch scenarios and discussions with UEFA, but without any meaningful progress.
The organization behind the project, A22 Sports Management, had made repeated attempts to gain recognition for its model, notably by seeking bridges with existing competitions and the new Champions League format. However, these proposals were not approved by European governing bodies.
After Juventus left in 2023 and now Barcelona’s exit, Real Madrid remains the only major club still publicly committed to the Super League project. President Florentino Pérez now stands alone on the front line, while the European Club Association, chaired by Nasser Al-Khelaïfi, handles most institutional dialogue with UEFA.
