Yet another storm is brewing in La Liga, and once again, the VAR is right at the center of it. Sunday’s 4–3 win for FC Barcelona over Real Madrid has been marred by controversy surrounding a disallowed goal late in the match.
Fermín López saw his potential equalizer ruled out due to a handball spotted after VAR review. While the decision may be technically correct, the real uproar stems from audio released by the Spanish Federation.
“Menos mal” – Relief or Bias?
In the clip, a VAR official is heard saying “menos mal” (“thank goodness”) when discussing the handball. The phrase, interpreted by many as relief over Barça’s goal being disallowed, has infuriated Barça fans and sparked accusations of bias.
The Catalan club is now demanding clear explanations, with supporters furious over what they see as a reflection of favoritism—fueling longstanding suspicions of pro-Real Madrid refereeing in Spain.
Once again, El Clásico leaves drama both on and off the pitch.
