Things have gone from bad to worse between Marc-André ter Stegen and FC Barcelona. The club has taken strong disciplinary action by temporarily removing the captain’s armband from the German goalkeeper amid growing internal tensions.
Open conflict between Ter Stegen and Barça. The situation began earlier this summer when Barça reportedly considered parting ways with Ter Stegen. The 32-year-old later opted for back surgery, which will keep him sidelined for several months.
While his absence could help Barça with their La Liga registration process—by reducing the wage bill—the club has hit a wall. Ter Stegen is reportedly refusing to sign his medical report, blocking the necessary paperwork from being submitted to the league.
Ronald Araujo takes the armband
In response, the club released an official statement on Wednesday: “FC Barcelona announces that, following the opening of disciplinary proceedings against player Marc-André ter Stegen, and until those proceedings are definitively resolved, the Club […] has decided to temporarily remove the captaincy from the first-team player.”
Ronald Araujo has been appointed as the new first-team captain in his place.
The episode highlights an escalating rift between Ter Stegen and Barça just weeks before the new season kicks off.
