Didier Deschamps revealed a moment as surprising as it was hilarious involving Adil Rami, right after France’s 2018 World Cup triumph.
The French national team coach shared this incredible anecdote during an appearance on Telefoot, shedding light on a funny scene from the tournament that Les Bleus went on to win.
A surprising reaction from an unlikely world champion
Crowned world champion without playing a single minute, Adil Rami still managed to leave a lasting impression… in his own way. Didier Deschamps recounted an unusual exchange with the defender, who remained on the bench throughout the competition. “I knew he was one of the players who hadn’t played a single minute. I went to see him and said, ‘Listen, Adil, I’m really sorry, I wanted to bring you on.’”
But Rami’s response completely caught the coach off guard. “He replied, ‘But coach, absolutely not! Coach, don’t put me on, I’m not good enough!’”
An improbable moment that perfectly reflects the team spirit within the French squad during the 2018 World Cup, and one that still brings smiles today.
