With five months to go until the World Cup, Thomas Tuchel has sent a very clear message to his players: with England, talent alone will not be enough. They must also be team players. And there will be no exceptions.
The Three Lions coach wants to build his squad primarily on human qualities and team cohesion. In comments reported by The Guardian, the German explains that his experience and that of former internationals is clear: when the connection between players is good, when everyone knows their role and understands why they are there, then the team can go far.
“When I talk to players who have already played in a World Cup, they all tell me that the difference is made when the connection is good, when communication is good between players,” the German coach explained in remarks quoted by The Guardian.
“When they feel that the right group is together, that they know their role, why they are there and what is expected of them, and that they would be happy to stay together for several more weeks, then they succeed.”
“Is he a good teammate?”
Tuchel thus adopts a very clear approach for his future selections. The selection will not be made solely based on talent, but also on each individual’s ability to integrate into a collective.
“Social qualities matter: is he a good teammate? Can he accept a supporting role? That will be the basis for selection,” warns the former PSG coach.
A clear warning: stars without a team spirit could stay at home, even just a few months before the biggest global event.
