Kylian Mbappé admitted his mistake after missing a penalty against Morocco. The France captain explained that he was unsettled by confusion surrounding the referee’s decision before taking his shot.
France secured their place in the 2026 World Cup semi-finals by defeating Morocco (2-0), but it was not a perfect night for Kylian Mbappé. A scorer and provider in this quarter-final, the French forward also missed a penalty during the match, an error he later addressed in the mixed zone.
Mbappé Explains the Confusion Before His Penalty
The captain of Les Bleus did not make excuses regarding the quality of his strike, but acknowledged he was destabilized by the delay and uncertainty surrounding the decision.
“I took the penalty badly, but it was complicated: there was confusion. The referee told me it was a penalty, so I got ready. Then he came back and said it might not be a penalty. I let myself lose focus. I hadn’t experienced that kind of situation before,” Mbappé explained, in comments relayed by Ilies Peeters.
An unusual sequence for the Real Madrid striker, who is typically comfortable in high-pressure moments. This time, the interruption before the kick seemed to disrupt his routine. Fortunately for France, the miss had no impact on the outcome, as Mbappé still played a decisive role in helping his team progress to the next round.
