The Girondins de Bordeaux may be edging closer to a historic change. According to reports from Ici Gironde, an agreement in principle has reportedly been reached between Gérard Lopez and the English investment fund Sparta Capital Management for the takeover of the club.
At last, many supporters might say. Gérard Lopez is willing to sell the Girondins de Bordeaux… but he is not leaving entirely. How is that possible? Here’s the explanation.
A New Era for Bordeaux
After several weeks of discussions, negotiations have reportedly made significant progress. The Spanish-Luxembourgish businessman would agree to sell 67% of the club’s shares while retaining a minority stake of 33%.
Leading Sparta Capital Management, Franck Tuil entered exclusive negotiations with Lopez in May. The project includes a total investment of €20 million over three years, with €6 million expected to be injected this summer to support the club’s revival.
However, Gérard Lopez would not disappear completely from the Bordeaux landscape. The current owner could remain as co-president alongside Gilles Frétigné, Franck Tuil’s associate, while also contributing €3 million to the project. A major turning point now appears to be taking shape for the Girondins de Bordeaux.
