In an interview with RMC Sport on the show Rothen s’enflamme, Ousmane Dembélé opened up about his role with the French national team and the huge tactical freedom given to him by Didier Deschamps. In typical Dembélé fashion, the PSG star spoke honestly and without any filter.
Ousmane Dembélé, as always, was brutally honest… maybe a little too honest? Even though he prefers playing centrally like he does at Paris Saint-Germain, the French winger says he is ready to sacrifice himself for the team. And he expects everyone else to do the same. He fully embraces the constant positional switches with Kylian Mbappé and Michael Olise. Against Brazil and Colombia, the three attackers moved everywhere to destabilize opposing defenses.
France’s Attack Looks Terrifying
“For about a year now, the coach has been giving me much more freedom with the national team,” Dembélé explained on RMC Sport. The former Barcelona player also revealed that Didier Deschamps constantly asks his forwards to rotate positions: “Whether it’s me or Michael, he tells us a lot to switch positions and not stay stuck either on the right wing or through the middle.”
Very close with Michael Olise in attacking movements, Dembélé believes this fluid system brings a lot to France. “We try to communicate a lot with each other, switch positions… it also creates a bit of chaos for opposing defenses,” he said with a smile.
The PSG forward also sounded extremely excited about France’s attacking potential ahead of the 2026 World Cup. With players like Mbappé, Olise and Rayan Cherki, Dembélé believes Didier Deschamps has “a lot of solutions” to build a devastating attack. But he also sent a strong message to his teammates: “If we want to win the World Cup, we’ll have to play as a team and defend as a team.” A subtle message for Mbappé? Or maybe Cherki? Everyone knows neither of them enjoys defending very much.
