Pep Guardiola is officially turning a huge page in his career. After ten seasons on the Manchester City bench, the Spanish manager has confirmed his departure one year before the end of his contract.
Pep Guardiola and Manchester City are truly over. Arriving in 2016, Guardiola leaves the Skyblues after a historic decade marked by twenty trophies, including one Champions League title and six Premier League crowns. During his press conference, the Catalan coach admitted that the decision had been growing in his mind for a long time.
Guardiola Ready for a Long Break
“I’m truly fulfilled. I can’t find the right words. I’m happy and proud. It’s the experience of my life, otherwise it wouldn’t have lasted ten years. I couldn’t be more grateful for all the love and affection, not just today but for many years. It’s time. It’s not like I went to sleep one day and woke up thinking ‘it’s time.’ It’s been a process, I’ve felt it for quite a while. The club respects me, it respects my decision. The club needs to be ready. Now I have to live my life and see what happens. The club needs a new coach, a new energy, with these incredible players we have right now, and start writing a new chapter,” said Pep.
The 55-year-old manager also confirmed that he will remain connected to the City Football Group as an ambassador, but away from the daily dressing room life and sporting decisions. Guardiola also hinted that he plans to stay away from coaching for a long time. “I don’t plan to coach for a while. Otherwise, I would still be here. I need to step back. I won’t coach for some time. I feel like I won’t have the energy every day with the pressure of fighting for titles. I know myself, I have that energy, but I feel like I won’t have it anymore in the future. A lot of people tell me: ‘after three months, you’ll come back.’ I answer: ‘Maybe.’ I don’t think so, it will take me some time. But I need to prove it to myself. It’s not just ten years here, I’ve been working every three days for so many years. People demand trebles and Premier League titles. I need to breathe a little and relax.”
After spells with FC Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Manchester City, one of the greatest managers in football history now seems ready to take a real break… before perhaps making an unexpected return one day.
