Back in the squad against Brighton (2-0) on Saturday, Mohamed Salah has still not clarified his future at Liverpool. With the Africa Cup of Nations approaching, the 33-year-old Egyptian forward is keeping everyone guessing, a situation that worries his captain, Virgil van Dijk.
Virgil van Dijk hopes Mohamed Salah will stay. The attacker is currently in conflict with his coach Arne Slot. Despite a frank discussion in recent days, the situation remains complicated and a departure cannot be ruled out.
Uncertainty Surrounding Salah’s Future
“I talk to him about everything. I told him that I want him to stay. I would really like him to stay because he is one of the leaders, but he is going to the AFCON,” the Dutch defender admitted, aware of the uncertainty surrounding his teammate’s future. “We will stay in contact in the coming days and weeks (…) but on the other hand, we all know football and we have no idea what will happen.”
Van Dijk nevertheless stressed Salah’s importance to the Reds, while acknowledging that other factors are involved. “He is still very important to the club, but there are other parties involved,” he added, hoping for a return from the AFCON in good condition. This uncertainty comes at a tense time for the Egyptian international, who, frustrated by his playing time, had expressed his dissatisfaction and was subsequently left out of the Champions League clash against Inter Milan (1-0) last Tuesday.
