Rayan Cherki’s talent is undeniable — Pep Guardiola knows it better than anyone. But to truly shine at Manchester City, the 22-year-old French playmaker (3 appearances, 1 goal in the Premier League this season) still needs to blend his brilliance into the team’s collective rhythm.
Back from injury, the former Lyon prodigy is receiving tough but caring advice from his coach. “Rayan is one of the most talented players I’ve ever seen in my career. He’s a top player,” admitted Guardiola.
“But the question is how he fits in and how he reads the game. He started well at the Club World Cup, then had a few weeks off. Most of the time, when the ball reaches him, the situation gets better. But you don’t always need to do something exceptional — sometimes you just need to play football.”
“He’s a player who doesn’t feel pressure”
The Catalan coach wants to harness Cherki’s street-style instincts without limiting his creativity.
“He’s a player who doesn’t feel pressure. He’s like a street footballer — he always wants the ball when he doesn’t have it. But he needs time, because in football, you learn to play with your teammates. Players like him are intelligent. They see everything,” added Guardiola, clearly impressed but aware of the development still required.
The message is clear: Cherki’s talent is real, but at City, genius alone won’t be enough. You have to learn to play for the team.
