The tension has not eased after France-Paraguay. Already heated on the pitch, the World Cup round of 16 continues to make headlines away from the field. At the heart of the controversy are Kylian Mbappé and Paraguayan senator Celeste Amarilla.
After Les Bleus qualified, Celeste Amarilla made highly controversial remarks targeting the French forward. Her comments quickly drew a very firm response from Kylian Mbappé. “You are a contemptible woman and unworthy of your office. You do not represent Paraguay, a country that showed passion and honor throughout the competition,” the France captain said. Mbappé then went further, denouncing remarks he considered racist: “Through your irresponsibility and your uninhibited racism, you have tarnished the image of a historic run achieved by your players. I will never allow people like you to spread their hatred and racism around the world.”
Celeste Amarilla responds in an open letter
But the matter did not end there. In a long open letter addressed to Kylian Mbappé, Celeste Amarilla responded in turn. The Paraguayan senator said the issue was not about France, but solely about the player. “The problem is between you and me. I never said anything against France. On the contrary, I support France,” she wrote, before recalling her ties to French culture: “I studied at a French school from the age of 2 until I was 17. We sang La Marseillaise and honored the French flag alongside our own. I speak French and I love visiting France.”
Celeste Amarilla insisted that “this has nothing to do with France. The problem is with you.” She notably criticized Mbappé’s attitude before the match, referring to his comment: “If we have to put our hands in the mud, then let’s do it.” According to her, Paraguay understood “the mud” as a reference to the Paraguayan team. The senator also accused the French forward of disrespecting Paraguayan players during the match and mentioned an alleged insult shouted by Mbappé: “La concha de tu madre,” which she described as an extremely offensive insult in Latin America. She also criticized his behavior after the match, particularly toward the Paraguayan goalkeeper.
The senator nevertheless admitted that she had reacted in anger. “My posts were written in the heat of the moment, with my blood boiling,” she explained, before saying she regretted her words and deleted the publication. But Celeste Amarilla is now demanding an apology from Kylian Mbappé. “Now I demand that you also withdraw your statements and apologize to me,” she wrote, arguing that Mbappé’s words were a personal and political attack. The controversy is therefore continuing to grow: on one side, Mbappé denounces racist remarks and says he will not let such discourse spread; on the other, Amarilla accuses the France captain of insulting her as a woman and a political figure. France-Paraguay ended several days ago, but this affair is far from over.
