The Roberto Martinez chapter is already over for Portugal. Just minutes after the Seleção were eliminated by Spain in the last 16 of the 2026 World Cup, the Spanish coach announced his departure.
Beaten 1-0 by Spain, the Portuguese national team leaves the World Cup earlier than expected. It is a failure that also marks the end of a cycle for Roberto Martinez, who took charge of Portugal three and a half years ago.
Jorge Jesus Expected to Start a New Era
Speaking at a press conference, the coach confirmed that it was his final match with the Seleção. “We recorded the best figures in the history of the Seleção and won the Nations League. We lost against one of the favorites while looking them in the eye. I hope Portuguese supporters will remember that we gave everything for three and a half years. This was my last match with Portugal. I thank the Portuguese people and the players,” he said.
Portugal must now prepare for what comes next. According to A Bola, Jorge Jesus is expected to take charge of the Seleção. It would be a strong choice by the Portuguese Federation, which would be banking on a highly experienced coach to relaunch the project after the World Cup.
The Portuguese coach knows national football perfectly and has enjoyed a long career at the highest level, notably with Benfica, Sporting, Flamengo and in the Gulf. His arrival would mark a major change of direction after the Martinez era, as Portugal prepares to open a new chapter with Cristiano Ronaldo having confirmed that he has just played his final World Cup.
