A thunderous shake-up has hit Turkey! Just two days after Fenerbahçe’s heartbreaking exit from the Champions League at the hands of Benfica Lisbon (1-0), the club has announced the end of its partnership with the famed José Mourinho.
The ‘Special One,’ who arrived with much fanfare in the summer of 2024, managed a commendable domestic season that saw the team finish second in the Süper Lig. However, the European failure proved to be his undoing.
In an official statement, Fenerbahçe expressed, “We are parting ways with José Mourinho, the head coach of our professional team since the 2024-2025 season. We thank him for his commitment and wish him success in his career.” Mourinho’s stint in Istanbul lasted just over a year, a brief episode in a coaching career filled with high expectations and dramatic exits.
Mourinho’s Fortune from Firing
According to Turkish journalist Yagiz Sabuncuoglu, Mourinho is set to receive a hefty severance package of around €9 million, which also includes compensation for his coaching staff.
While this is a significant payday, it’s a far cry from the record-breaking amount he netted when he was dismissed from Manchester United, where he pocketed over €22 million back in 2018.
Mourinho’s departure from Fenerbahçe may have been swift, but it certainly won’t be forgotten soon. As he moves on to the next chapter of his illustrious career, fans and critics alike will undoubtedly be watching to see where the ‘Special One’ lands next.
Will he bounce back stronger, or is this the beginning of a downward spiral for one of football’s most controversial figures? Only time will tell.
