José Mourinho is completely blurring the lines regarding his future. While the Spanish press claims his return to Real Madrid is almost finalized, the Portuguese coach delivered a completely different message on Saturday after Benfica’s 3-1 win away at Estoril.

José Mourinho is dodging the rumors. Signing for Real Madrid is apparently not on the table… at least officially for now.

Speaking to reporters, the “Special One” insisted he was very close to staying at Benfica. “There is a 99% chance that I stay at Benfica because I have a contract with Benfica and a renewal offer,” Mourinho said, while also admitting that talks were taking place between his agent Jorge Mendes and the Madrid board.

Despite this surprising statement, Spanish media outlets continue to insist that José Mourinho will become the next Real Madrid manager this summer. Marca even reported that there is a “99.9%” agreement for the Portuguese coach to return to the Bernabeu thirteen years after leaving the club.

Currently under contract with Benfica until June 2027, Mourinho could still leave Lisbon this summer to return to a Real Madrid side in full crisis mode. Between tensions surrounding Kylian Mbappé, disappointing results, and internal conflicts, Florentino Pérez is reportedly searching for a strong figure capable of regaining control of the dressing room. According to Sport, a full agreement already exists between the Madrid president and Mourinho, with Pérez convinced that only the Portuguese manager has the authority and experience needed to calm the current chaos at the club.
