Paris Saint-Germain made a huge statement. With their emphatic 5–2 victory against Chelsea in the first leg of the Champions League round of 16, the Parisian club has taken a massive step toward qualification and is now very close to reaching the quarterfinals.
For some observers, the tie already seems decided. Speaking on the Canal Champions Club set, Samir Nasri did not hesitate: in his view, Paris is already qualified. Yet there are still 90 minutes left to play. Chelsea would need to score at least three goals without conceding to overturn the situation. Needless to say, a comeback from the Blues would cause a real earthquake in Paris.
Statistics strongly favor PSG ahead of the second leg
The numbers also support PSG’s advantage. According to Opta, Football Rankings, and Football Meets Data, the Parisians now have a 93% chance of qualifying before the return leg.
Paris will still need to finish the job on Tuesday at Stamford Bridge to officially secure their place in the quarterfinals. In the next round, PSG could face either Liverpool or Galatasaray. The Turkish side currently holds a slight advantage after their 1–0 win in the first leg.
