Despite PSG’s convincing 5-2 victory over Chelsea in the Champions League, Matvey Safonov failed to fully reassure observers in the Parisian goal. For Emmanuel Petit, this remains the real problem for the Parisian side.
With Lucas Chevalier on the bench and Gigio Donnarumma sold, PSG can only rely on Matvey Safonov to guard their goal and hope to go all the way in the Champions League in pursuit of a back-to-back title. However, the Russian goalkeeper is not fully convincing. He was notably responsible for a handling error on Malo Gusto’s goal, reigniting concerns about the goalkeeping position in Paris.
Growing doubts about PSG’s goalkeeper situation
For Emmanuel Petit, the issue could become crucial in the race for the European title. The former French international questions PSG’s ability to go all the way with performances that sometimes appear fragile between the posts.
“The question I’m asking myself is: can you win the Champions League and repeat last year’s achievement with a goalkeeper who shows weaknesses in several areas? Is PSG capable of going all the way with a goalkeeper who still gives you reasons to worry?” the pundit wondered on RMC. Petit believes the level of competition will only increase. “Chevalier is the same… Last year, remember what Donnarumma did after being heavily criticized for a long time. The level will rise and you’ll face much more clinical attackers. You’ll need a goalkeeper capable of making two or three decisive saves,” he warned.
