RC Lens did consider signing Anthony Martial. The northern French club explored the possibility of bringing in the former France international, who is currently a free agent. It was an attractive idea on paper, but the move ultimately did not progress very far.
Lens tried to pull off a major coup with Martial. Sporting director Jean-Louis Leca was reportedly tempted by the prospect of another high-profile signing. After already attracting experienced and well-known players such as Florian Thauvin and Allan Saint-Maximin, Lens also turned their attention to Martial.
Lens wanted another statement signing
Martial’s profile offered several advantages. He has extensive experience at the highest level, particularly from his long spell at Manchester United, while his free-agent status meant Lens would not have had to pay a transfer fee. However, according to L’Équipe, the situation quickly became more complicated. The French striker, who has recently changed agents, reportedly has several particularly lucrative offers on the table, prompting Lens to reconsider their position.
Lens therefore decided not to pursue the deal any further, believing the operation could become too expensive. At 30, Martial is still looking for a new challenge to revive his career after spells with Lyon as a youngster, Monaco, Manchester United and Sevilla. Lens are unlikely to be his next destination unless there is an unexpected turnaround, with the club keen to keep control of its wage bill despite its ambition to attract established names.
Martial’s future therefore remains open. With several offers already available to him, his next move could soon become clearer, but it now appears increasingly likely that his career will continue away from Bollaert.
