Antonio Rüdiger has clearly not calmed the controversy… quite the opposite. After his very dangerous challenge on Diego Rico during the defeat against Getafe (0-1), the Real Madrid defender made some astonishing statements.
Antonio Rüdiger is not exactly known for his subtlety. That much is clear. And several days after this extremely dangerous incident, the Real Madrid defender still does not understand why he is being criticized for it.
A controversy fueled by defiant remarks
“I didn’t kill him,” the German said, while admitting that the images might look violent. A shocking statement that is already sparking strong reactions, especially after a challenge widely considered to be highly questionable. Rüdiger insists there was no intention to injure, even suggesting that his opponent exaggerated the situation.
“I think the guy overreacted. You’ve seen the replays and it looks horrible. Of course, I’m not here to argue, but I didn’t kill him. No need to exaggerate. If I had intended to hurt him, he wouldn’t have gotten back up,” he explained, as reported by Marca. “I’m not trying to justify my action, but he was chasing after me, right? I like to play hard, but I have my limits and I don’t cross them. I think the guy exaggerated, we need to put things back into perspective.”

No apology, no regret shown: comments that are going down poorly and reigniting the debate over his aggressiveness. At Real Madrid, the controversy is growing around a player who embraces a physical style of play… but may have crossed the line.
