Kylian Mbappé is once again under fire after a string of disappointing performances for Real Madrid, but Carlo Ancelotti has come to his defense.
The French forward has been heavily criticized by the Spanish press, especially after his underwhelming display in the Champions League Round of 16 first leg against Atlético Madrid (2-1). Despite a strong start to the season, his recent form has raised concerns.
However, Ancelotti remains supportive of his star player, reassuring that his dip in form is temporary:
“What we saw against Atlético is that he didn’t replicate what he did against Manchester City (3-1 in the UCL play-off second leg). Against City, he scored three goals, and against Atlético, he didn’t score,” explained the Italian coach.
“Overall, he’s doing very well, and we are very happy with him. He knows, just as we do, that he won’t always be at his best. It wasn’t his best version against Atlético.”
“It’s Genetic”
Ancelotti believes Mbappé’s struggles are natural and temporary:
“In such a demanding season, it’s quite normal, especially for a player of his quality. Players with great quality have more ups and downs because it’s genetic,” he stated.
“For a player of his level, maintaining consistency is more complicated. That’s what happened to him in this match. But he is a great player.”
The Italian also reminded everyone of Mbappé’s crucial contributions to Real Madrid’s Champions League campaign:
“If we’re in the Round of 16, it’s largely thanks to him because he scored four goals in the play-offs. We are all happy with him, and he will contribute even more in the final stretch of the season.”
And possibly as soon as Sunday against Rayo Vallecano in La Liga.
