Olympique Lyonnais tried to secure a fixture adjustment for their Ligue 1 opener. According to L’Équipe, the Rhône club asked the LFP to postpone their match against Toulouse, scheduled for Saturday, August 22, on the opening day of the championship.
OL/Toulouse, the first match of the season, will not be postponed. And yet Lyon had arguments. The reason is simple: this fixture could end up squeezed between two very important European matches. If OL get through the first Champions League qualifying rounds, the club could play a two-legged play-off around this clash against TFC.
Lyon Face a Tricky European Schedule
The calendar could therefore create a real sporting problem. OL must first get through the early qualifying rounds, scheduled for August 4 or 5 for the first leg, then August 11 for the return leg. If they qualify, the Champions League play-offs could potentially frame the Ligue 1 match against Toulouse.
But Lyon’s request was not accepted. Still according to L’Équipe, the LFP refused to postpone this opening-day match between Toulouse and OL. The game therefore remains scheduled for August 22.
The decision could complicate Lyon’s preparation if they enjoy a successful European run. Between fatigue, travel, squad management and the major financial stakes of the Champions League, OL may have to deal with a particularly delicate week. For now, everything depends on Lyon’s results in the qualifying rounds, but the LFP’s message is clear: the opening-day calendar will not move.
