Maxime Lopez could have changed dimensions in 2017. At just 19 years old, after bursting onto the scene at Olympique de Marseille, the little maestro of midfield was… on the radar of FC Barcelona. And far from being just a rumor, it was all true.
Maxime Lopez almost signed with Barça. But “almost” doesn’t mean he arrived there. In the show Détective Mathoux, Lopez confirmed that an official contact had taken place. “The sporting director of Barça had called my agent; he wanted to see if I could confirm my first season,” recounts the current Paris FC player. “I had the perfect profile for their style: small stature, very technical… even if it was a very high step.”
At the time, many mocked him, convinced he was inventing a story too good to be true. Except that the proof came from… Ousmane Dembélé himself.
Just arrived in Barcelona in 2017 — before becoming Ballon d’Or 2025 — the French winger had actually called him to say that the club was seriously considering him.
Maxime Lopez loves Paris and PSG
“I could already see myself playing with Messi… It was crazy. But there you go, a little excitement.” The transfer never happened. A door slightly opened towards Barça… which ultimately never opened. Maxime Lopez now plays for Paris FC and says he loves the city of Paris, being from Marseille.
Having left Marseille in 2021 for Italy, and then recently returned to France at Paris FC, Maxime Lopez continues to surprise Marseille supporters. Because the 27-year-old midfielder loves life in Paris: “Paris is exceptional. Life here is incredible, even though the cold shocked me!” he confides. And paradoxically, it’s in the capital that he encounters… the most OM fans: “90% of the time, I hear ‘Allez l’OM’. And they are Parisians!”
Between compliments to PSG and a lasting love for Marseille, Lopez walks a fine line. One thing is certain: his words will leave no one indifferent, neither at the Vélodrome… nor at the Parc des Princes.
