Trump Urges Iran to Boycott the World Cup “For Its Own Safety”

The 2026 World Cup could take place without the Iran national football team. Iran’s Minister of Sports, Ahmad Doyanmali, announced that his country is considering boycotting the tournament, which will be partly hosted in the United States, amid heightened political tensions between the two nations. Donald Trump quickly reacted to the possibility.

A World Cup in the United States without Iran? The country now claims it may refuse to take part in the competition next summer. “There are no conditions under which we would participate in this World Cup,” the Iranian official said, condemning the recent conflicts and bombings that have struck his country.

This decision could force FIFA to find a replacement for the Iranian national team, currently placed in a group with Belgium, Egypt, and New Zealand.

The situation has also sparked a response from Donald Trump, who suggested that Iran’s absence might actually be preferable. “The Iranian national team is welcome at the World Cup. But I really don’t think its presence would be appropriate, for its own life and safety,” Trump said.

It now remains to be seen how FIFA president Gianni Infantino will react to this new and potentially explosive issue.
