A year after leaving Paris Saint-Germain, Marco Verratti opened up to La Gazzetta dello Sport about the real reason behind his unexpected move to Qatar.

For the Italian midfielder, PSG had simply become too predictable. “Winning had become a habit. Here in Qatar, I’ve rediscovered that thrill of victory, that childlike joy. In Paris, winning felt… boring,” he admitted.

Verratti was also quick to shut down rumors that Luis Enrique pushed him out: “That’s false. I spoke to Nasser well before Enrique arrived. I just needed a new challenge. We parted on great terms. He’s a wonderful person.”

That Legendary Night with Messi

The former PSG star also recalled the iconic 2021 summer night in Ibiza that brought Lionel Messi to Paris. “We were at dinner with Neymar, Di Maria, Paredes… and Messi. We told him he had to come. The next day, Neymar called me and said: ‘Marco, Leo is joining us.’ It was magical.”

Strong Ties with Neymar and Mbappé

Despite the changes at the club, Verratti still holds close bonds with his former teammates. “Neymar is humble and generous. We still talk. And Kylian has a killer mentality — he’ll win the Ballon d’Or, no doubt.”

As for the PSG project? Verratti is confident: “They still have stars, but now the team is stronger. Luis Enrique has done a brilliant job. PSG will keep winning for years.”
