Arsenal has finally landed its new striker: Viktor Gyökeres is on his way from Sporting CP in a €73.5 million deal. And the Swedish forward isn’t just joining the Gunners—he’s picking up one of the club’s most legendary numbers: Thierry Henry’s iconic No. 14.
The transfer is all but official. Gyökeres, 27, will undergo his medical this weekend before signing his contract with Arsenal. The move makes him the fourth most expensive signing in club history, and a major addition in the Gunners’ push for the Premier League title.
A symbolic number for a massive signing
After lengthy talks, Arsenal upped its offer to convince Sporting to let go of its top scorer. With 43 goals last season, Gyökeres is coming in hot—and he’s ready to take on the pressure that comes with wearing the No. 14 shirt, once worn by Arsenal legend Thierry Henry.
To help make the move happen, Gyökeres even waived the 10% transfer fee he was entitled to—a gesture that underlines his determination to join the Premier League side.
On the Sporting side, a replacement is already lined up: former Marseille striker Luis Suárez, fresh off a 27-goal campaign in Spain’s second division, is close to signing.
