Benjamin Mendy’s Swiss adventure is already over after just five months. On Thursday, FC Zürich officially announced the mutual termination of the French left-back’s contract, with no details provided about his future.
Arriving from Lorient in February, Mendy made only eight appearances in all competitions. The 31-year-old defender failed to convince head coach Ricardo Moniz, who didn’t mince his words.
“He didn’t deliver what we expected from a player of his status,” said the Dutch coach to Le Matin. Poor fitness levels, questionable commitment, and off-field behavior quickly became major concerns.
Partying after a heavy defeat sparks anger
In April, just hours after a humiliating 4–0 loss to Basel, Mendy was seen partying. That was the final straw for his coach: “After a 0–4, you just can’t do that in front of the fans,” Moniz fumed.
A hostile reception from day one
From the moment he arrived, the former French international (10 caps) faced hostile banners and jeers, tied to his past legal issues — despite being acquitted of sexual assault charges by British courts.
The context left him with no room for error. Now a free agent, Benjamin Mendy’s future this summer is more uncertain than ever.
