Barcelona coach Hansi Flick addressed the media ahead of Saturday’s La Liga opener at Mallorca, giving a clear update on the club’s transfer plans.
Flick confirmed there will be no move for a new centre-back despite Iñigo Martínez’s surprise departure to Saudi Arabia. “Honestly, no. We can use Gerard Martín in that role. He’s versatile and improved a lot last season,” the German said.
He also ruled out any major late sale, including highly rated Fermin Lopez, linked with Manchester United and Chelsea. “He was spectacular last season and has improved in recent weeks. I’m very happy with him,” Flick concluded.
Elevate the squad level
Barcelona begin their title defence with three high-profile signings already secured: goalkeeper Joan Garcia, striker Marcus Rashford, and winger Roony Bardghji. While Garcia is registered and expected to start against Mallorca, Rashford and Bardghji are still awaiting clearance to play in La Liga. Flick believes these additions can elevate the squad’s level but stressed that success will depend on delivering results over the season.
The coach also admitted his surprise over Martínez’s decision to leave but wished him well for the future. “I wasn’t happy about it because he’s a great player, but I understand his choice,” he said. With no further major departures or defensive reinforcements planned, Flick’s focus is now fully on integrating the new arrivals and starting the season strongly.
