According to Foot Mercato, Walid Regragui’s departure has now been confirmed. After several weeks of official denials, the Royal Moroccan Football Federation is preparing to turn the page and has reportedly chosen his successor to lead the Atlas Lions toward the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Walid Regragui had submitted his resignation just days after the defeat in the Africa Cup of Nations final against Senegal. As in the past under Vahid Halilhodžić or Hervé Renard, the Royal Moroccan Football Federation immediately denied the reports. A familiar strategy: publicly ease tensions before making a final internal decision.
A strategic transition for Morocco’s national team
Worn out by three intense years—highlighted by a historic semi-final at the 2022 World Cup and a 2025 AFCON campaign that ended in a frustrating final—the 50-year-old coach felt he had reached the end of his cycle. Despite a historic record at the helm of the national team, the former Wydad coach chose to step aside. The FRMF reportedly delayed the announcement to secure his successor before making his exit official.
According to Foot Mercato, the chosen replacement is Mohamed Ouahbi. A surprising profile: a pure development coach who spent 17 years at the RSC Anderlecht academy before taking charge of Morocco’s U20 team in 2022. Since then, he has shone by winning the U20 World Cup in October 2025, the first global title in Morocco’s history.
