Morocco no longer has a head coach: Walid Regragui has stepped down after an Africa Cup of Nations campaign that could have been historic, but ultimately ended with scandals and suspensions.
Walid Regragui came close to a major achievement by leading the Atlas Lions to the AFCON final, just one penalty away from a long-awaited title not won since 1976. Despite Brahim Diaz’s missed panenka against Senegal, the coach restored his reputation after the post-AFCON 2023 criticism and now holds the best record in the national team’s history.
Uncertainty Around Morocco’s Coaching Future
But in a dramatic twist, worn down by the pressure, Regragui has reportedly submitted his resignation to the Moroccan federation. His future now depends on the FRMF’s decision: either it rejects his resignation and he continues preparing for the World Cup, or it approves his departure and must urgently find a replacement.
If the resignation is rejected, Walid Regragui will lead the team at the 2026 World Cup. He still benefits from the strong support of his players.
