Reprimanded by the Saudi league, Cristiano Ronaldo is facing mounting pressure at Al-Nassr. After reportedly boycotting several training sessions and refusing to play against Al-Riyadh (1-0), the Portuguese striker was publicly called out by the Saudi Pro League, which firmly rejected his criticism over what he described as unequal management of clubs by the Public Investment Fund.
CR7 has been sharply criticized — and not lightly. In a statement shared with the BBC, the SPL responded directly to the Portuguese star, who believes his club is being treated unfairly.
Saudi Pro League Defends Equal Governance Rules
“The Saudi Pro League is built around a simple principle: each club operates independently under the same rules. Every club has its own board, its own management, and its own sporting leadership. Decisions regarding recruitment, spending, and strategy fall under the responsibility of each club, within a financial system designed to ensure sustainability and competitive balance. This system is applied equally across the entire league,” said the Saudi authority’s spokesperson.
The league also highlighted Ronaldo’s positive impact since joining Al-Nassr, while setting a clear boundary. “Since his arrival, Cristiano has been fully committed to Al-Nassr and has played an important role in the club’s growth and ambitions”.
“Like any top-level competitor, he wants to win. But no individual, no matter how important, determines decisions that go beyond his own club. Recent transfers clearly demonstrate this independence. One club strengthened in a certain way. Another chose a different approach. These were club decisions made within approved financial parameters.” Tensions reportedly rose after Karim Benzema’s transfer to Al-Hilal, while Al-Nassr made no major signings this winter.
