Targeted by Olympique de Marseille last summer, Aymeric Laporte ultimately turned down the Marseille option. The central defender has now revealed the truth: yes, there were discussions, but his decision had already been made.
Aymeric Laporte confirms that OM could have convinced him. Courted by several clubs, the Spanish international chose a return to his roots rather than a new challenge in Ligue 1.
Laporte chose a return to Bilbao over Marseille
“There was an approach, yes. There was interest, not only from OM but also from other clubs. There was the idea of moving closer to home, to my father and my family. I had decided to return to my roots. That’s what brought me back to Bilbao,” explained the Spanish international.
The result: a move to Athletic Club. A decision driven more by the heart than by career considerations, which definitively closed the door on a potential arrival in Marseille.
