It was a bleak Sunday for Real Madrid. Held to a 1–1 draw at Girona and overtaken by Barcelona at the top of La Liga, the Merengues are under pressure. But is Xabi Alonso’s job truly at risk? According to the Spanish press, not quite.
Some whispers suggest Alonso is criticizing refereeing decisions to deflect attention amid the team’s poor results and growing discontent inside the dressing room. Yet he still has strong backing from key figures — including Kylian Mbappé.
“I have no reproach for my players. We must stay united and show constructive self-criticism. As for the penalty on Rodrygo, it’s surprising that VAR didn’t review it. It was an action that should have been looked at, in my opinion. These are decisive moments that can change a match. I didn’t check it myself, but I was told there was contact,” the coach said after the match.
Zidane rumors return… but no change planned
The tough tone reflects the frustration surrounding the club, currently going through an inconsistent spell. And while rumors of Zinedine Zidane returning as a temporary “savior” are circulating, Real Madrid has made its stance clear: despite the complicated moment, no coaching change is planned, according to El Chiringuito.
For now, Alonso stays — Zidane remains only a rumor in the background.
