The football world is in mourning. Liverpool forward Diogo Jota, 28, tragically lost his life in a car accident in Spain during the night between Wednesday and Thursday.
The crash occurred around 12:30 a.m. in the province of Zamora, with Jota traveling alongside his brother André Silva (25), a player for Portuguese second-tier side Penafiel. According to early reports confirmed by the Guardia Civil and relayed by the BBC, the driver lost control of the vehicle, which veered off the road and caught fire. Both brothers died instantly.
“The information we have so far indicates that the car, a Lamborghini, crashed due to a tire blowout while overtaking. The accident took place at 12:30 a.m. in Cernadilla, Zamora. The vehicle burst into flames, and both occupants were killed,” authorities told A Bola.
A Career of Class and Dedication
Jota rose through the ranks at Paços de Ferreira before shining for Atlético Madrid, FC Porto, Wolverhampton, and ultimately Liverpool, where he became a vital part of the squad. He helped the Reds claim the 2025 Premier League title.
On the international stage, he earned 49 caps and scored 14 goals for Portugal, playing key roles in their Nations League triumphs in 2019 and 2025. His loss leaves a deep void in Portuguese football.
Portugal Pays Tribute
In an official statement, the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) shared its sorrow: “More than just a fantastic player, Diogo Jota was a remarkable person, respected by all. A contagious joy, a role model for youth. We have lost two champions.”
At the FPF’s request, a minute of silence will be held Thursday evening ahead of Portugal’s Women’s Euro clash with Spain.
