Fresh off France’s qualification against Ukraine, Kylian Mbappé was supposed to head to Madrid for ankle examinations. Instead, the France captain was spotted… in Dubai. The unexpected detour ignited a major backlash , and Jérôme Rothen absolutely lost it live on RMC.
For Rothen, Mbappé’s decision is nothing short of disrespectful toward Didier Deschamps and the national team.
“Honestly, it shocks me. And it’s my responsibility to say it, I stand by it. It’s not even about Mbappé personally. I’d say the same about any captain,” blasted the former PSG winger. “What I don’t understand is this: how does Didier Deschamps allow this? Either he agreed with Mbappé, and then fine, but he needs to explain it. Or he didn’t, and then there have to be answers.”
“But it’s Mbappé, you’re not allowed to say anything!”
Rothen didn’t stop there. According to him, this isn’t the first time Mbappé has “arranged things” to avoid less glamorous trips.
“What shocks me even more is the lack of respect for the manager. You take a 6-hour flight instead of 5, and there’s no medical appointment. Madrid confirmed nothing was scheduled for his ankle. And he’s the captain, yet he skips Azerbaijan because he can’t be bothered. Lots of players were annoyed to go, but they still went.”
Then came the real explosion: “He doesn’t even hide anymore! Same in Sweden, same in Iceland, he skipped it for a ‘small sprain,’ and three days later he was training again. Now he has a slight issue, and after his great performance against Ukraine, especially that fantastic first half — he heads off like this?”
“Scores a penalty, gives an assist against cones… amazing! But hey, it’s Mbappé, so no one’s allowed to talk! People say I’m obsessed. No, he’s the captain of France, he owes trust and accountability. This generation is so disconnected.”
The controversy adds yet another chapter to the growing debate surrounding Mbappé’s off-field behaviour and his role as a leader for Les Bleus.
