Rumoured to be leaving at the end of the season, Marquinhos has just blown up PSG’s entire defensive roadmap. The captain—supposed to make way for a new generation after thirteen years of loyal service—has now decided… he may not be leaving at all.
Marquinhos freezes his succession: he wants to stay, full stop
Fresh off celebrating his 500th appearance, Marquinhos dropped a bombshell: “Finish my career at PSG? Honestly, I won’t say no.”
A huge admission, and above all a major pause button pushed on the succession plan the club had already set in motion. “At PSG you must always be at the top, young players are pushing, but as long as the coach and the president want me here, why not stay for a long time,” he told RMC Sport.
PSG were preparing the post-Marquinhos era… they can shelve it now
In recent weeks, the trend was clearly pointing toward a departure. The club was exploring several replacements—Upamecano, Konaté, Zabarnyi—as part of a major rebuild in central defence.
But now? Sudden halt. Marquinhos wants to continue, extend his legacy, and remain the leader of the back line. And Luis Enrique, who values his captain, isn’t opposed to the idea.
In short:
– PSG were actively looking for his successor.
– Marquinhos has decided he is not replaceable just yet.
Paris will now have to rewrite their entire defensive plan… with their captain still firmly in command at the heart of the back line.
