The 2025 AFCON final was marked by a victory for Senegal, but above all by serious incidents. After a penalty was awarded to Morocco in the 96th minute, the Senegalese team left the pitch, a gesture strongly condemned by FIFA, which denounced unacceptable behavior and announced the possibility of heavy sanctions. Morocco, for its part, has promised not to let the final and its excesses go without consequences.
FIFA recalled that violence and the refusal to respect refereeing decisions have no place in football, condemning the conduct of several Senegalese players and members of the technical staff and stressing that leaving the field in such a manner is simply unacceptable.
A Final Marred by Walkout and Controversy
The international body also insisted that decisions taken by referees must always be respected, on and off the pitch, and that teams must play in accordance with the Laws of the Game, warning that any other behavior threatens the very essence of football and should never be repeated.
Morocco is now calling for the exclusion of the Senegalese national team. The Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) announced that it will initiate legal proceedings before the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and FIFA to rule on Senegal’s withdrawal from the pitch during the final against Morocco, as well as on the events that accompanied that decision after the referee awarded a penalty unanimously deemed correct by specialists.
The FRMF said that this situation had a significant impact on the normal course of the match and on the players’ performance, and it also expressed its heartfelt thanks to the Moroccan supporters who remained loyal to the national team with their massive presence and unconditional support throughout the tournament, as well as to all those who contributed to the success of the competition.
